The 2nd Seoul International Forum for Literature

Seoul Declaration of Peace

Today, at the dawn of the 21st Century, we witness with dismay the nations of the world still being ravaged and threatened by wars, acts of terrorism, and other forms of violence bringing about destruction of life and environment, The threat of nuclear, chemical and other weapons of mass destruction hangs over the heads of humanity. Fanaticism, political ideologies and cultural chauvinism feed into politics of war and violence. Also responsible is the lack of a sense of solidarity.

We, writers taking part in the 2005 Seoul International Forum for Literature, believe that war is failure of reason and admission of incompetence among nations must be settled peacefully within the framework of international law.

To abolish war, we must condemn political, ideological, and religious doctrines that support it. We must away with aggression, bigotry and self-centeredness, and advocate perseverance, endurance and compassion. Peace is a product of long patient work. We must call upon those who are in charge of the fate of their nations work together in order to uphold peace throughout the world.

We must strive to ensure for all humanity justice, equality and freedom from persecution, pain and suffering. Perpetual poverty defines life in some countries; people starve and suffer from malnutrition and lack basic necessities. Without narrowing the widening gap between the haves and have-nots, further conflicts are inevitable.

Lasting peace depends on the healthy condition of life on our planet. We must look carefully into the causes of the extinction of species and the degradation of the environment. Our resources are being depleted and devastated. Toxic waste is released to pollute the air. Corruption, greed and hasty profit-making go unchecked. Concerted efforts are necessary to restore the health of the earth.

We call on the peoples of the world to support movements and programs to:

    1. Abolish war as an instrument of international politics.

    2. Work for global disarmament, and for prevention of nuclear proliferation.

    3. Increase aid to the poorer nations in the world.

    4. Abolish discrimination and ensure the equality of rights and benefits for all in society.

    5. Demand equitable labor policies and practices, and make them enforceable nations.

    6. Respect of all minorities.

    7. Protect and preserve the environment for all sentient beings.

We are fully aware that we are meeting in a country artificially divided for more than a half-century and still threatened by nuclear war. We hope there will soon be a peaceful resolution for problems caused by the division of the country and the tension that still persists. Also, as a special problem related to it, we would like to ask for international support for the preservation of the DMZ wildlife zone in Korea, an ironical product of the unfortunate division as it is.

We call upon all nations to put pressure on their governments to adopt policies for a peaceful global community. We know that our voices alone are not going to dramatically change the present or future of the world. But we will not be silent to become accomplices of those causing the pains and sufferings of their fellow creatures.

Let us work for peace in the world altogether. Also, we understand that peace means work of moral commitment, dialogue, forgiveness and reconciliation.
